Mount Walker is a classic Olympic Peninsula hike that packs a lot into a relatively short outing, offering year-round access, steady elevation gain, and some of the best panoramic views in the region. Starting just off Highway 101 near Quilcene, the trail climbs through lush, mossy forests of Douglas-fir, hemlock, and cedar before opening up to sweeping viewpoints over the Hood Canal, the Olympic Mountains, and even Mount Rainier on clear days. You can hike it as a shorter out-and-back or make it a scenic loop by descending the forest road, which is especially nice when it’s closed to vehicles in winter. With no required passes, free parking, limited snow most of the year, and a moderate challenge that feels rewarding without being overwhelming, Mount Walker is an easy go-to for anyone looking for big views, forest vibes, and flexibility on the Olympic Peninsula.
